History & structure of the Tidy Towns competition

The Tidy Towns Competition began in 1958 when it was started by Failte Ireland.
Right from the start, the primary focus of TidyTowns was to encourage communities to improve their local environment and make their area a better place to live, work and visit.
The competition inspires a huge amount of voluntary effort in towns and villages across the country. The effort of hundreds of TidyTowns committees and tens of thousands of volunteers not only improves the environment in which we live but also helps to cement community relations and build pride in our communities.
The Tidy Towns competition has been improving the environment in which we live for 57 years and has helped to foster Ireland’s image abroad. It is a national competition organised by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. It organises the initiative with the support of national sponsor SuperValu and a number of other agencies. Its success continues, and while it has moved with the times, it still retains the same core principle of its founders - "make your place a better place."
Assessment of participating towns is carried out by an independent panel of adjudicators appointed by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government and takes place during the months of June, July and August each year. This assessment is conducted in secret and on unspecified dates.
Each entrant is assessed under eight criteria with a total of 450 marks available as follows -
Community Involvement & Planning (60 marks)
Built Environment & Streetscape (50 marks)
Landscaping & Open Spaces (50 marks)
Wildlife, Habitats & Natural Amenities (50 marks)
Tidiness & Litter Control (90 marks)
Sustainable Waste & Resource Management (50 marks)
Residential Streets & Housing Areas (50 marks)
Approach Roads, Streets & Lanes (50 marks).
The winners are announced every September at a prize giving ceremony in Dublin.
In addition to the main competition there are also a number of special awards which highlight local environmental activities:

Repak Tidy Towns Best Bring Bank Award
Tidy Towns Biodiversity Notice Nature Award
